CHAMPAIGN, Ill. / VINCENNES, Ind. — Vincennes University Baseball went 1-3 in a two-day Midwest Athletic Conference series against Parkland College on April 6–7. The Trailblazers move to 14-25 overall and 8-12 in Region 24/MWAC play.
Game One — Parkland 16, Vincennes 6
Parkland took control early in the series opener, using a nine-run second inning to break the game open on the way to a 16–6 victory.
VU scored three runs in the first and added three more in the fifth but could not keep pace as Parkland plated runs in three of their four innings played. Freshman Matthew Everroad went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while freshman Ethan Papalios went 2-for-3. Freshman Carter Gricius, freshman Carson Reed, freshman Grady Hartman, and sophomore Evan Doran each drove in a run as the Trailblazers totaled eight hits.
Sophomore Eastin Whaley (2-4) took the loss after allowing eight runs in 1.1 innings. Sophomore Grayson Reichert and freshman Hayden May followed in relief, with sophomore Cole Trevino adding a scoreless inning.
Game Two — Parkland 12, Vincennes 4
Parkland completed the sweep of the opening day with a 12–4 win.
The Trailblazers trailed 7–0 before scoring four runs across the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by home runs from freshman Ethan Papalios and sophomore Carter Gricius. Freshman Matthew Everroad went 3-for-3 to lead the offense, while Gricius went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Sophomore Jacob Allen (4-4) took the loss after allowing eight runs over three innings. Freshman Drake Hoffa allowed four runs in relief, while freshman Carter Williams followed with 2.1 scoreless innings.
"Really disappointing start to the series," head coach Chris Barney said. "We didn't get it done on the mound. We had hitters in two-strike counts and couldn't finish them off, which extended innings and hurt us."
Game Three — Parkland 11, Vincennes 1
Parkland carried its momentum into the third game, taking an 11–1 win.
VU was limited offensively, with freshman Tannar Patterson, freshman Ethan Papalios, and freshman Matthew Everroad each recording a hit, with Everroad adding a double and the Trailblazers' lone RBI.
Freshman Talan Meyers (2-3) took the loss after allowing six runs over 2.1 innings. Freshman Elijah Papalios, sophomore Alex Wandersee, and freshman Jackson Bauer each saw time in relief.
Game Four — Vincennes 14, Parkland 11
VU responded in the series finale with a strong offensive performance, earning a 14–11 victory.
The Trailblazers scored five runs in the first inning and plated runs in six of the eight innings played, capitalizing on eight walks and timely hitting. Freshman Tannar Patterson went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while freshman Ethan Papalios went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Freshman Tyler Singleton went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while sophomore Evan Doran drove in two runs. Freshman Lucas Frack went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and freshman Matthew Everroad added an RBI as VU totaled 11 hits in the win.
Freshman Kaagen Kendall (2-1) earned the win, allowing four runs over five innings. Freshman Palmer Schiff provided 2.2 innings of relief, and sophomore Grayson Reichert secured the save with 1.1 scoreless innings to close it out.
"Extremely proud of the way our players bounced back after the first three games," Barney said. "We got strong pitching performances and took advantage of our opportunities offensively. Hopefully this gives us momentum moving forward."
Vincennes returns to action with a single non-conference game at home against Olney Central College on April 8. The Trailblazers dropped a 7–6 decision at Olney on March 25. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST.
