VINCENNES, Ind. — Vincennes University Baseball dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader against Lincoln Trail College at Jerry Blemker Field, falling 9–5 in the opener before a 17–0 setback in the nightcap. The Trailblazers drop to 6-10 overall on the season.
Game One — Lincoln Trail College 9, Vincennes 5
VU jumped out to an early advantage in game one but was unable to hold off a late push from Lincoln Trail as the visitors rallied for the 9–5 victory.
The Trailblazers plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take early control. Lincoln Trail responded with three runs in the second inning before adding single runs in the third and sixth innings and a three-run fifth to take the contest.
Freshman Ethan Papalios led the offense with a strong performance, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Freshman Matthew Everroad added two hits, including a double, and drove in a run, while freshman Braden Casebier recorded two hits and an RBI. Freshman Palmer Schiff also contributed offensively with a hit and scored twice, and freshman Carson Reed reached base twice with a hit and a walk as VU totaled 10 hits in the contest.
Sophomore Jacob Allen took the loss after working 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out five. Sophomore Alex Wandersee provided 2.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs — both unearned — while striking out two.
Despite the early offensive success, Vincennes committed two defensive errors that extended innings and allowed Lincoln Trail to capitalize on additional scoring opportunities.
Game Two — Lincoln Trail College 17, Vincennes 0
The nightcap proved difficult for the Trailblazers as Lincoln Trail capitalized on early opportunities and a decisive fourth inning to secure the sweep.
Lincoln Trail scored four runs in the opening inning before adding another in the third and breaking the game open with an 11-run fourth inning.
Freshman Palmer Schiff recorded one of VU's two hits in the contest, while freshman Aiden Vaught added the other. The Trailblazers drew four walks but struck out nine times against Lincoln Trail pitching.
Freshman Braeden Burton took the loss after allowing five runs over 3.0 innings. Freshmen Elijah Papalios, Carter Williams, and Jacob Tenbarge also saw time on the mound as Lincoln Trail capitalized on walks and timely hitting throughout the shortened contest.
VU will look to bounce back Tuesday, March 3, when the Trailblazers host John A. Logan College at Jerry Blemker Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
