VU Athletics Recognizes Top Performers at 2026 Willie Awards

VINCENNES, Ind. — Vincennes University Athletics celebrated a year defined by excellence, leadership, and community impact during the 2026 Willie Awards, the department's annual all-sports end-of-year banquet held April 29 at Highland Woods Community Center.

The evening brought together student-athletes, coaches, staff, and supporters to recognize achievements across all programs, while honoring the values that define the Trailblazer experience—academic success, competitive excellence, service, and character.

"This night is about more than trophies or titles," said Director of Athletics John Meeks. "It's about celebrating the effort, leadership, and resilience that our student-athletes demonstrate every single day—whether in competition, in the classroom, or in the community. The Willie Awards reflect the heart of what it means to be a Trailblazer."

Two of the department's most prestigious academic honors were presented to sophomore student-athletes who achieved the highest level of success in the classroom while balancing collegiate athletics. Women's Basketball student-athlete Iris Comesaña-Varela earned the President's Female Academic Excellence Award after maintaining a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA while pursuing a degree in Architectural Studies. She is on track to graduate this May and plans to continue her academic and athletic career at a four-year institution, with long-term aspirations of earning a doctorate and becoming a university professor.

On the men's side, Men's Golf student-athlete Brock Naile received the President's Male Academic Excellence Award after also achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA. Naile completed his degree in Business Administration and will continue both his academic and athletic career at Brescia University, with the goal of becoming a certified public accountant. These awards are presented annually to the sophomore male and female student-athletes with the highest academic achievement at VU.

The Muditā Unsung Hero Award, rooted in the philosophy of selfless joy in the success of others and presented to the student-athlete who best demonstrates a team-first mentality, was awarded to Women's Basketball student-athlete Zion Hayes. Hayes was recognized for her consistent support of teammates, positive leadership, and ability to uplift those around her regardless of role or circumstance, embodying a "we over me" approach throughout the year.

The Community Champion Award, presented to the program that makes the most meaningful and consistent impact through volunteerism, service, and community engagement, was awarded to the Men's Basketball program under Head Coach Todd Franklin. The program was recognized for its extensive outreach efforts, particularly in connecting with and inspiring youth throughout the Vincennes community, while serving with integrity, compassion, and purpose.

Karl and Emily Yetka were named Fan of the Year, an honor given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional and unwavering support, passion, and dedication to Trailblazer Athletics. Their presence at events across campus, combined with their impact on student-athletes through community involvement and academic support, has made them an integral part of the VU Athletics family.

The Lasting Legacy Award, presented annually to a faculty or staff member who makes a significant and lasting impact on student-athletes through mentorship, service, and support, was awarded to Bradley Wolfe. Wolfe was recognized for his critical role in supporting student-athletes through housing coordination and his consistent commitment to meeting their needs, often going above and beyond to ensure their success and well-being.

A special recognition honored longtime broadcaster and former sports information director Dave Hunter, whose more than 50-year career—including 44 years as the "Voice of the Trailblazers"—has left a lasting imprint on VU Athletics through storytelling, dedication, and service to generations of student-athletes and fans.

The Noel Carie Male Athlete of the Year Award, named after VU's first All-American and presented to the male student-athlete who best exemplifies athletic excellence, leadership, academic achievement, community impact, and perseverance, was awarded to Men's Bowling student-athlete Colton Martin. Martin delivered a historic season, capturing the NJCAA Singles National Championship with a 738 series while earning All-American honors. He maintained a 3.4 GPA in cybersecurity and consistently demonstrated a team-first mindset, leadership, and commitment to excellence both on and off the lanes.

The Natalia Bartnovskaya Female Athlete of the Year Award, honoring one of the most decorated female athletes in VU history and presented to the female student-athlete who exemplifies excellence across performance, leadership, academics, and community impact, was awarded to Women's Volleyball student-athlete Rylee Edwards. Edwards played a pivotal leadership role on a championship-caliber team, surpassing 1,000 career assists and earning All-Region 24 honors. In the classroom, she achieved NJCAA Academic All-American status while completing her degree in Physical Therapy Assistant, consistently demonstrating servant leadership and a commitment to her team's success.

The evening concluded with the presentation of the Harry Meeks Athletic Director's Cup, the highest honor awarded to a VU program that demonstrates excellence, integrity, and distinction in the classroom, in competition, and in the community. The award is named in honor of longtime women's basketball head coach, athletic director, and NJCAA Hall of Famer Harry Meeks, whose legacy helped shape the foundation of Trailblazer Athletics. This year's recipient, the Women's Cross Country program under Head Coach Tyler Steigenga, exemplified those ideals through championship-level performance, national success, and strong academic achievement, including posting a 3.43 team GPA during the fall semester. The program's ability to excel across all areas—academics, competition, and community—set it apart as the standard for all-around program success at VU.

"As Trailblazers, we don't just follow a path—we make one," Meeks said. "This group has set a standard that reflects who we are and where we're going as a department."
